ZF failure?
I am considering adding a ZF transmission to my '68 bronco. Just wondering if anyone had experienced a failure and under what conditions. Miles, load, mods... My brothers mazda tranny went out in his '89 F150 and I would like to avoid a similar situation.

a ZF is a heavier duty tranny i have one in my truck and its got 212k on it and as far as i know no work has been done to it ive looked at it and i havent seen any new gaskets on it and the PO said hes only had the a new clutch put in it so long longevity wise its a good tranny and ive hauled plenty of loads with it and its still shifts like a champ.

I'm in the process of rebuilding mine after experiencing some unusual noises and louder than normal gear rollover noise. It turned out to be the thrust on the reverse gear, which I believe was caused by abuse, not faulty parts. The dogs on reverse gear were severely worn too. I guess just the luck of the draw on a used ebay transmission...

I have the ZF5 s47 on my 97 7.3 diesel. It's got 274K on it. To my knowledge it's had a clutch put in it at about 235K but no internal tranny work. The only reason it's grinding now is because the PO drove it for many miles on worn clutch linkage that caused the clutch to not disengage. So basically it was harder on the synchros. I just got a rebuild quote from the local tranny shop a couple days ago for $1400 and thats with me removing and re-installing.
