Coolant system leak question

OK. Maybe I'm missing something really obvious. Here is the back story. I am doing the switchover to ELC coolant. I got new upper and lower hoses (the one that goes around the belt), new thermostat, new thermo gasket, new thermo housing, and new coolant of course.

I went through the write-up to flush the system and flushed with distilled water, yada, yada, yada. I followed the direction to a tee. Torquing the bolts on the thermo housing to 15 ft lbs. So I'm all done, and ready to pour new coolant in and I hear dripping! It was leaking out of the thermo housing. So I thought to myself, 15 ft lbs is not a lot, I'll snug them up. It didn't help.

I tried the old housing, the old thermostat, the old gasket....nothing worked. It's driving me crazy. Everything I have tried has just resulted in wasting coolant.

Any help is appreciated.

Jason

Have you tried a little bit of black RTV to seal the housing? When I replaced my water pump last month, I installed a new thermostat but I used the original housing. I cleaned it up on the wire wheel and noticed some mild pitting on the sealing surface. I didn't want the thing to leak so I put some black RTV on it and it sealed fine. You don't have to get crazy with the stuff....put just enough to do the job and let it cure for a few minutes before you install the housing.

To be extra sure, install the housing and then let it sit for several hours or even overnight before you fill up the system.

Good luck!

Thanks Greg. I'll try that. When I get angry at something like this, I quit thinking of other options. That's why I love this forum.

Any other ideas?
