I have a quick question and want to get some opinions on trailer wiring. I have a 95' F150 without the towing package and I just wired in a standard 4 wire trailer plug. Everything works but if I have the trailer plugged in and turn the head lamps on the tail lamp fuse will blow after a few seconds, after the fuse is blown the blinkers, brake lights, etc still work on the truck and trailer but the tail lamps that stay on all the time when the head lamps are on will not work. I'm thinking its not a short as both the tail lamps and brake lamps are controlled by the same wire and brake lamps always work fine. Is it just drawing too much current with the tail lamps on the truck and trailer on at the same time or what? I tried a 30amp fuse instead of a 15amp but it did the same thing.
I doubt that your problem is too much current draw. Sounds like you have a short somewhere. I don't know how you wired this in but you can buy a plug where all you have to do is unhook the taillight harness, put the plug in place and put a 4 wire pigtail into the plug to feed your trailer lights. Only takes a few minutes to install. This way you don't have to chop and tape your harness. I THINK I bought mine at K-Mart. Would think they would be available at most parts stores.
