The compact spare tire in my '99 Taurus (soon to be my daughters) recently exploded in it's stow in the back of the car. The car is a wagon and a regular tire is out of the question.
The problem that I'm having is finding a replacement tire / rim. The tire dealers don't sell them. Two Ford dealers that I called said they get theirs from the junk yards and the junk yards that I called said they don't have any.
My daughter will be driving the car from Va to Illinois in about 12 days and I can't let her go without a spare. My son in law is not mechanically inclined and has very little automotive common sense.
What's wrong with the full-size spare? Might be the best option for the time being, even though it wouldn't stow properly. Make sure the son-in-law knows how to change one before you send them off
I can't help on the tire, but I would suggest that they get AAA. Shorebird thinks that you may have to wait a while for a tire change, but I'd avoid doing it myself under most circumstances ( and yes I have done it -- more than once).
AAA ( or an equivalent) gives me a lot of peace of mind for trips.
Thanks everyone. All very helpful. I called tire rack and they want $119 for the tire and it will take a week to get it to Va. The ebay motors site is also a very good option and may be the better one too. Again, 3-8 days for shipping.
My sister and BIL from Maine are coming next weekend. He said he'll look up home and try to find one and bring it down.
If not, then we will go find a full size rim and buy a real cheap NEW tire. That will hold them until the correct spare can be obtained.
Thanks again everyone. I had no idea that these things were as hard to find as they appear to be.
don't do ebay go visit the local boneyards first . here is a short list of ford vehicles i remember that share the same bolt patterns . thunderbird 90 - 97 , cougars of the same years , obviously the sable , mark 8's that are based on the mn12 platform , windstar mini vans , and there's a couple of other wrong wheel drive turds that use it also . be cheaper just too buy it local , rim and all , or if a nabe has one of the vehicles , have someone distract them while you abscond with their spare !!!!!!!!!!!! LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My Brother in Law as able to find one in a junk yard up in Maine and got it for five dollars. Down here you can hardly fond one and up there the attendant was willing to give it away.
your just too far away or i'd gladly have given you the one outta the trunk of turd bird . when i am not carrying a bunch of shtuff in it i carry one of the 91's rims and tires full size as a spare .
