How long in between towing did it sit? Diesels really don't like to sit much at all(particularly the 6.0). I would suggest taking it out altleast once a week and romp on it after it gets to operating temp.

Your towing scenerio sounds good. The terrain that you type that you go through should be enough to help keep them clean, but if you do it once a month, irony is it's like you don't do it at that point.

I heard you about the economy, unfortunately, the truck doesn't know that the economy sucked. It's just like having a kid in some respects. Doesn't matter if you didn't earn as much this week compared to last, it still has to eat and drink and be taken care of. A lot of people don't seem to realize that about this new(er) diesels, either that or they don't care about it, and what they require. Now rather or not it should be like that, that's another debate entirely, but as far as the 6.0, that seems to be the way that it is.

Did not see this in your OP but I would change to SYNTHETIC oil and put a couple of cans of Seafoam in the oil. Take it out and drive it hard. This cycles the VANES (could not help myself, bismic) and with the synthetic oil and an excellent cleaner, like Seafoam, it should help. Sounds like you do a lot of sustained hard towing that keeps the turbo at high EGTs for long periods of time. If you use dino oil, it probably caused "coking" on the vane actuators causing them to stick and or the shaft bearing to possibly fail. Coking will not happen with synthetic oil.

Like you I put about 15,000 miles per year on my X and it sets sometimes for a couple of months since I primarily tow with it and drive it on long trips. No matter how long it sets, everytime I start it, within 10 to 15 seconds, my turbo sounds like an aircraft APU. I have instant turbo whine and response when I mash the GO pedal. I have never had any turbo problems or the turbo apart for any cleaning in 90,000 miles. I use Royal Purple 20W-50 synthetic motor and two cans of Seafoam.

DSM, do you add the 2 cans of Seafoam only at your oil change interval? And it is added to the oil?

Are you using dino or synthetic oil?

I add 2 cans of Seafoam when I change my oil. 13 quarts of oil and 1 quart (two 16 oz cans) of Seafoam. I also pour a can in the fuel tank at every other fuel fill up. As previously stated, never had a turbo or injector problem in 90,000 miles.
