I am probably going to get the Alpine 7893. It has 60watts peakx4. Is that going to power my four mids pretty decent? I also have a 4 channel fosgate 500x but I would rather not have to wire everything to it if the head unit will push my mids well. How much better of a sound would I get if i amped it all?
u can power mids off a HU but u wont get the full potiental out of them. i had mine runnin off the HU then i used a cheap jensen amp (50x4) and difference was night and day. 3x a loud, cleaner and more brilliant sound.
You'll be fine.... Just don't be lead into believing that your h/u will put out anything near 60x4 watts. I don't think that any head unit puts out anything more than 15 undistorted watts into 4 ohm loads throughout the 20-20,000 hz bandwith. I'm even doubting that most head units put out more than 10 watts per channel.
60 is supposedly the max so the rms would be like 25 watts or so i believe. I guess i'll just hook up that fosgate 500x that I have. it puts out like 37.5x4 I was just not wanting to run all the damn speaker wires all the way to the amp because that is kind of a hassle to do it the right way with all the wires hidden but oh well.
Here's a litte tip I once learned for running speaker wires...
Running the wires around various trim pieces and into your doors can be a pain. If you want, you could instead run a set of speaker wires along side your RCAs. Hook up the one set of RCAs to your h/u. At the same time, hook up that same side of speaker wires to your Metra (or other brand) h/u wiring harness. So I'm telling you to connect those wires instead of the wiries comming off of your h/u's speaker wires.
So you would want to connect your speaker wires to the white and gray wires on the Metra harness.
Now you will have 4 (or 8) loose wires on your h/u's wiring harness. You will need to use tape, wire nuts, or butt connectors to prevent those wires from grounding out. If that were to happen, your h/u's internal amp would be fried immediately
Now run all your speaker wires/RCAs to your amp. Simply connect the other end of the RCAs and your speaker wires to your amp. All done!!!
I may have made this sound more confusing since I elaborated so much. Instead of leaving out details, I instead chose to cover every detail.
