NJ ends auto inspections except emissions

Thoughts?

N.J. ends auto inspections, limits emissions testing | NJ.com

New Jersey has become the 30th state that no longer inspects privately owned motor vehicles for mechanical defects. And emissions testing will now start when vehicles turn five years old, instead of four.

The changes, which formally take effect today, will save the state about $17 million, mostly from scrapping 2.4 million inspections and re-inspections performed each year.
But commercial-plated vehicles — including school buses, limousines, jitneys and taxis — will still be checked for both emissions and mechanical defects.
Critics say the policy change will make the state's roadways less safe. But Motor Vehicle Commission officials say the state could no longer justify spending million on the inspections.
The state pays a private company to do the inspections and is charged per inspection.

I can't say I disagree with the critics philosophically, and maybe the solution was an inspection every five-seven years instead of every two.

Drive through Newark or Patterson a few times and you might appreciate other drivers being required to have inspections on occasion.

I always use vehicle inspections as a cheap/free way of getting a list of what to fix

I think if you had to pay some to inspect your truck or car. we will have safer road ways! I would mind paying 85 dollar every 2 years for safety inspection.

i have never taken any of my diesels through an inspection line, and i have owned at least 1 diesel at any given time over the last 23 years. at one time i had 6 of the. i register them for 11,000 lbs, and fall under the self inspection rule.

Yes, except they still check gas cap, that is part of the emissions system.

^ Thats what i did with my IDI... Some fresh young cop pulled me over in Galloway b/c my exaust was "real loud for a pickup" after arguing with him that a diesel registered 10,001 or more didnt require an inspection sticker he gave me a ticket for no sticker. He also didnt accept my pba card (thinking it was a fake and took it) of course i fought it. Had to go to court 3 times for it. That was 3 seperate days i had to take off of work. That was $450 out of my check. I took my lawyer on last day when the dumb cop was there, (wasnt there for first 2 times) and showed proof that i didnt need sticker. Judge adjerned and my lawer responded with we wanted to sue cop for my lost wages... judge made him personally pull it out of his paycheck ( was his payday ) and pay me back. He was totally humilated in front of everyone in the court room... I just laughed n laughed..

Watch out for the guy behind you with NO BRAKES! LOOK OUT!

Make it mandatory in large cities like Newark, Jersey City, Paterson, Camden etc. These cities are where the most unsafe vehicles are driven. The could care less how there car stops as long as it GOES! lol

Some crazy crap, no more mandatory inspections, in the state that has the most vehicles per square mile...make it mandatory you have your vehicle inspected each year at a private garage licensed by the state...

Remember, the car next to you on Route 78 could have NO BRAKES!
