My experience with Mods

2001, F350, 7.3 PSD, 2WD, DRW, 102K miles.

From RRD: ISSpro EV2 guage set, (Trans temp, Pyro, Boost) Pillar color matched. HPX, RFx, CCV Mod, Spyder Boot Kit, Plenum Inserts, 6637 Intake,MBRP 4" Aluminized Ehaust.

Before I ordered Mods I researched FTE site for How to's, and suggestions, and to further simplify things I decided to order all the parts from RRD. The parts came in over a 5 day period because of drop shipping from other sources. Service was prompt and well done. Clay is good.

Took my time and referred back to FTE regularly and called Clay a couple times. Took me about 3 days to do all the mods I am sure it could be done faster but I was in no hurry. The HPX was interesting because everything has to be just right to get the threads to start at both ends. Some careful prying and manipulating got it done. If you find that by starting one side and then can't get the other, then reverse process by starting the other side and trying again. Always be careful not to cross thread. RFx was OK just pay close attention when taking the old fuel block off. The plugs on the heads were tough to get out. Because I had decided to re-tourque the Rocker supports and injectors and do the UVC Mods (50 cent mod) there was plenty of room to remove the valve covers and do the other mods. I replaced all the boots and put in the Aluminum Plenum inserts, a very worthy mod, those stock plenums are very flimsy. The CCV mod is good for the boots and intercooler but just dumps some ugly fumes under your truck. The old exhaust system had to be cut off because I was working without a lift. Not a problem though. The new exhaust fit very nicely and was not a problem at all. (I watched a video on Youtube to see it done).

The only Mod that I am not pleased with is the 6637 Air filter. I think it is a hack job to make it fit and not that pleasing to look at. If I were doing it again I would spent the extra money and get one of the kits that replaces the battery box and gives you a filter box and washable filter. I had to modify my battery box so much to make the 6637 fit that I decided to get a new battery tray, which created new problems. Just my opinion. With a visit to my Ford dealer I found that you can get a factory tray made of steel for the drivers side. Wrecking yard would be an excellent source because a new one from Ford is $114.

Overall the mods made the engine run smoother and quieter. I have only the seat of my pants impression to judge the improvements, but I would say the truck is more responsive and the mid range is much smoother. The tail pipe noise is deeper and richer and LOUDER.

Sounds like you had a good time and are very satisfied, thanks in large part to doing your homework and not rushing things. The truck runs excellent in stock configuration; when you incorporate the right combination of mods.....well there's just no comparison!

Regarding the 6637 mod, I've seen some nice fabrications, but for me the AIS with fender sleeve was the way to go.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

When I did my 6637 in my old 99 I originally just cut the stock battery tray to eliminate the part that was under the factory airbox. I later swiped a passenger side batt. tray out of a 6.0 that had been wrecked for $10 and installed it on the driver's side- much cleaner look (only had to drill a couple holes to make it fit). A passenger side tray from a 7.3 would work just fine also (pretty sure they are the same).
