I wouldn't call it a "bad" location, from a purley mechanical standpoint it serves it purpose just fine. If you want to move it, it is a simple has having a muffler shop put new pipes on, they will route them anywhere you like.
When I put my Magna-flow exauhst on, I chose a single in - dual out, and ran the dual pipes straight out the rear. Looks pretty sharp.

I've replaced quite a few of these. In 1998 ( I think) Ford decided that the tailpipe in front of the wheel wasn't a good idea due to condensation from the exhaust rusting the r/r wheel nuts, studs and rim. If the customer complained about it we would install a new muffler/tailipipe assy with the tailpipe behind the wheel. I have no idea what a new muffler/tailpipe assy would be worth from Ford but you might be able to find a good used one. They dont rust so the wreckers might have some around. A few of us Ford techs took old systems and installed them on our earlier trucks.....they install easily and last a long time. And my truck has ugly wheels on it anyway so the condensation doesnt really hurt much
