Changing fuel filters
ok guys,, i know this will sound stupid,, but i figure its more stupid not to ask. I'm trying to learn all about these trucks to do some of my own work, since i'm out of warranty and didnt get much help when it was covered. Im wanting to change my fuel filter (s). How many do i have, the dealer said maybe 2., is one in the tank?. I"m gonna find some instructions online but is there anything bad I should watch out for? I'm gonna do the oil, etc also but thats not the problem. Oh and by the way,, its a 2005, F250 6.0 powerstroke diesel, crew cab. thanks.. Herb

I would strongly urge you to find the 6.0 engine forum, and take your 6.0 questions there. You'll get a lot better info.

Briefly, you have two filters. One is the large primary and is part of the fuel pump-water trap-fuel heater. Known as an HFCM. The second is smaller and is on top of the engine next to the oil filter. There is no pump or filter inside the tank. Not like a gasser.
The one place where most people mess up on the fuel filter change is to not prime the pump properly before starting the truck. Then they get air in the system and the truck shuts down and is very hard to purge and restart. Don't let that happen to you. After you complete the filters change, turn the key ON but don't start, wait 30 seconds or until you hear the pump stop, then turn the key OFF. Do that 3 - 6 times total. Then start her up.
