I own a 1998 Ford Expedition 4 X 4 with approximately 42,000 miles. The vehicle has developed an obnoxious noise of vibration while in gear with the brakes applied, like at a stoplight. The vibrating noise seems to be coming from underneath the vehicle as versus an engine noise. The noise occurs about 60 % of the time. Has anyone had a similar experience with good results of repairing the problem? Thanks for your assistance. Regards, Gary
I had mine in the shop last week for a tune up and tranny service and had hoped to get that obnoxious rattle fixed at the same time. Turns out the heat shield on the passenger cat is pretty well rusted out and makes a good bit of noise flopping around. Not covered under warranty and not a separately serviceable part. Dealer recommended to tack weld it (something they couldn't do though...) Interesting thing is this seems to be due to A/C evap condensation draining onto the exhaust pipe.
i just bought a 98, and it does the same thing, the dealer said that is the way ford made those exhaust system, they said you could dent the pipe, and it will go away! There should be something else that can be done! They told me that the heat shield and the exhaust is not loose or vibrating!
Sorry to get back to you, i was on vacation!
The CarMax dealer is the one that told me about denting the pipe. They didn't say exactly where, just that it would be in different spots. I am going to a Ford Dealership Monday Morning, wish me luck, maybe they can fix it for me - I convinced CarMax to pay for it!

That is exactly what happens. The air run off goes down and rust the shield. I have headers put on my 98 and we discovered this. The put all new pipe on front to back and made a heat sheild and spot welded it on. It is as quiet as a mouse. Well except for the flowmasters....lol
I finally think i will get my vibration fixed... I took it to a local muffler and brake shop. They also at first found nothing wrong with the muffler system, and still hasn't...but.... when the noise occured in front of them the guy went under the car and found a hairline crack on the hanger on the trans mount for the exhaust pipe. This little crack was causeing this huge noise and vibration. He would push up on the mount and it would go away. The dealer will pay for the fix to the muffler shop since tbey found it. The fix should be done by next week.. So we will see....
Pablo - I will send this to the other questions concearning viabration as well...
Your success is encouraging and sounds quite similar to what I’m experiencing. I’m trying to learn the cause and effect of the vibration so that I might be able to get it to perform when I have it at the Ford dealership. As of this date it will periodically vibrate loud and aggravatingly but not at the dealership yet. I’ll explain to them your experience and see if they might be able to locate a crack on an exhaust pipe hanger. Thank you for your report. Regards, Gary
An update on my situation... I had mine over to a local exhaust shop and repeated the Ford tech's diagnosis of the problem (A/C drain running off onto the cats, resulting in rusty heat shield.) He let me get under and poke around, exhaust is fine. There is a fair amount of tubing and what not mounted to the frame with plastic clips that seems a little flimsy although none appeared to be the source of the noise.
Just as a data point, I have always been able to control the noise by "power braking" slightly, running the engine up to around 900 RPM. This would seem to be consistent with the mount theory which sounds very promising.
Sorry to be so slow visiting this post again, my aother ride has been living at the dealer lately.
Hey all...
I'm new here, and just so happen to be a Ford Tech....I'm not too sure of the number, but there's a TSB out on the Engine/Tranny mounts. THey cause the crossover pipe to contact the trans crossmember, and cause the vibration...
Wonderful information. Do you have any other details I can pass on to my local Ford technician? Perhaps a refrence number to the problem you detailed. Thanks, Gary
okay i am stupid...what is a TSB number??? Is that something i can have a ford dealership look up and fix a problem for free????
Also do you know being a Ford tech if the hanger mount that i described earlier is supposed to be two or just one like on my exp.
They said this noise was coming from the transformer case. Someone has said the transmission and the engine never matched up due to a design flaw. I have taken mine to Amoco who charged me 50 bucks and said take it to Ford who said it was a minor problem but I want it fixed.
