threw a 3 month old universal this morning. at 50mph. lots of fun. anyway when it went it apparently slit a tire as well (haven't quite figured out how yet) i did find a piece of a small trucks leaf spring in the road about where all this happened. could be that did the tire in or is it possible it did both the tire and the u-joint. my real question is i have looked around under the truck things seem like they are all in one piece but should there be specific damage i should be looking for. there was no warning that this u-joint was going bad. no vibration no thumping or any such symptoms. so what would you guys be checking if it were you? here are some pics

Was it vibrating after you put the u-joint in, or did it just let loose? did you put the u-joint in, or did you have a shop press it in for you? Do you notice any marks on the driveshaft (indicating they put it back in the same way) if a shop did it? So many variables.
it was put in by a friend. it was put back in properly (i double check everything after work is done) there was no vibration since replacement. again no warning whatsoever just find it odd that it just let loose out of nowhere.
so i've ordered my new tires. and picked up a new universal with the universal straps/bolts. would like to check for balance on my driveshaft but can't be without my truck for over a week. anyone know a way to check the balance without sending it out. (no place local does it they all ship them an hour away)
I'm guessing the leaf spring you found caused this.
The only thing I would check is to make sure that your drive shaft slip joint spline isn't bottoming out for some reason, putting abnormal pressure on the U-joint. You'd see evidence on the nose if it did bottom out.
