Good Luck...Bad Luck

Had to make an unscheduled trip to Tucson this morning. Bad luck.
Drove about 70 miles and pulled over at a small town to use the restroom.
Walking back to my truck I noticed stuff hanging down from the engine compartment. Looked like long thin strips of rubber.
Opened the hood to find a shredded serpentine belt. Bad luck.
Luckily I kept my old one from the last time I changed it. Good luck.
Forgot to bring some tools. Bad luck.
Found a tire repair shop within walking distance with a 1/2" breaker bar. Good luck.
Just recently changed my upper radiator hose to the wrap around kind. Good luck.
Was back on the road in 20 minutes.
Let's hope there is no more bad luck for the rest of the weekend.

For those who are curious...
First OEM belt changed at 109k miles, still looked new.
Second belt (Motorcraft) changed at 202k miles, also looked pretty good.
Third belt from NAPA lasted 50k miles.
Looked like PartsGuyEd will have an order in his Inbox when he returns from RRE.

The belt im running now is a Napa...I shreaded my last belt in a small town while traveling luckily there was a Napa (better than Advance, I went through two of their belts in a few months)
Hope this one lasts...I keep a breaker bad in the toolbox just incase.
Good call on changing the upper rad hose.

If I were you, I'd closely inspect all your pulleys to make sure the bearing isn't wearing out on an idler pulley, or the tensioner isn't bad, or any other reason that might cause your new belt to shred also.

Good idea. I checked them real good before I put the used belt on. All pulleys looked good and the idler spun freely without any squeaks. How do you test the tensioner?

I drove 80 miles with the used belt and checked it when I got here and it looks good. But I agree with your suggestion and will keep an eye on it for a while.

Thanks

Sorry for the little bit of bad luck, happy for all the good! I changed my oem belt when I bought my truck even though it looked good, did the idler and tensioner pulleys too. I keep the old one behind the back seat, just in case. I broke mine back in 92 up in Montana on hwy 2 near the Canadian border on Sunday night, Sucks!
I also put the outside hose on, just in case.
