68 f-1oo gas tank location

Ford introduced the Evaporative Emission System in 1970. The auxillary tank used with Evap Emission holds 22 gallons (without-25 gallons), has a coffee can sized hole in it used for the fuel vapor valve.
1970/72 F100's sold new in CA were required to have Evap Emission, other states may have required it. Some 1970/72 CA F250's under a certain GVW also had Evap Emission, and some 1973/79 trucks sold nationwide have it as well.

1967/69: The fuel filler neck/fuel cap pokes thru the quarter panel (bedside) above the scallop line (bumpside) almost in line with the in-cab tanks fuel cap.
1970/72: The fuel filler neck/fuel cap pokes thru the quarter panel (bedside) below the scallop line.
Inside the bed there is a sheet metal deflector, it protects these parts from being damaged by cargo that could slide around.

Thanks gentlemen for all your help. Did the side mount tank mount outside or inside the frame? If outside like the Chevies mentioned, I agree , your just trading off one bad for a little less bad. I like the behind the rear axle idea. There appears to be a difference in rear frame width between 68 and 70 forward. I've got 26.25 inches between rails behind the crossrail directly behind the rearend going out to 29.5 to the back. There are only 16.25 inches between the two crossrails so I am assuming that any rear mounted tank would have be mounted under the frame? I have completed the frame, suspension, drivetrain and do not have any body parts on yet so now is the time to make the change whether to side mount or rear mount. Again thanks for all your help guys!

Ford: The auxillary tank mounts on the inside of the left frame rail.
GMC/Chevy: Their tank mounted on the outside of the left frame rail, butted up against the quarter panel (bedside)
As stated, what happened to these GM/Chevy tanks when the trucks were T-boned was not pleasant!
Rear mounted fuel tank. I'm not in favor since I recall the exploding Pinto fuel tank fiasco.
The Pinto fuel tanks were made exactly the same as the 1965/73 Mustang fuel tanks which some ppl install in their trucks.
Upper/lower sections spot welded together forming a lip that protruded from the entire circumference of the tank by 3/4 of an inch.
When Pinto's were rear ended, that lip hit the rear axle's center section, the tank split open, the gasoline poured out, the cars exploded.

But the Pinto did not have a truck frame surrounding the fuel tank. Pinto was a Unibody design with no frame.

Really slick install. Where did you get your tank? I guess JC Whitney would be a place to star. I haven't checked, being a truck guy, but do you know if there is an equivilent online to LMC or NPD for cars? This is a heck of a site....very addicting and hard to stay off

It's a Canadian made tank, better than overseas tanks. Sending unit ohm parameters match the truck fuel gauge so all you have to do is run the wire back to the tank.

68 F100 gas tank relocation
Hi rattler12, My 68 F100 does the samething. 26.25 inches to 29.5 inches between the rear rails. But the bottom of the rails are the same 26.5 inches all the way out to the end of the rail. I also HAD 16.25 inches between the two rear crossmembers. You are going to have to move the last crossmember all the way back to where it comes to within a .50 inche of the end of the rear bumper brackets. Your new tank width will be 25.25.0 inches. Use .625 inches of clearance all the way around. Your tank will be bottom mounted to the rails and sticking up inside the rails about 4.0 inches. I will have to find my paperwork or measure my tank and give the rest of the dimensions to you. I hope this answers your questions about the rails.

67 F250 Camper Special
I still have my father-in_laws 1967 F250 Camper Special 2wd.
It is all original AZ truck. Father-in-law bought it new in Phoenix. I live in Mesa. He died and left it to my wife. I have just finished having the 352 rebuilt (very nice)...on stand waiting to go. It still has the orginal AM radio in it.
I read someone said the didn't have a side tank. Well they apparently had that option because I just took the stock underside (drivers side inside frame rail with big heavy steel protector plate). The tank is nasty inside. I am ordering a new Spectra 22.5 OE replacement tank. I have even pulled up old "fordification" diagrams of the e.e.c. and non e.e.c. diagrams with hoses.
the biggest problem I have is I have two scroll "CamperSpecial" emblems which are broken in half and one brand new one I bought. I can't find a second unmolested one. I really don't plan to go too crazy restoring it since it really is such nice orignal (non rust) Arizona. I really just want it running good when I sell it. I have a 66 A code Pony Mustang Coupe (Arizona original) and a 1966 F250 Factory Crew Cab (factory automatic) which I really want to start on
