Sorry in advance for the ignorant post. Having the oil cooler/egr delete thing. This is a California emissions truck. I'm trying to get prepared to kill the codes and the CEL (if it goes on). How is it done ?. Do I have to by the software and hardware ? Can I get a good diesel shop to flash it for me ?
Thanx in advance
For hardware you'll need an SCT. For the custom tune go with Eric at Innovative Diesel.
Don't let a local shop fool you into any other piece of equipment. Custom tunes have been proven, and can be written so they don't add any power over stock.
William, thanx for the reply. Can a diesel shop get rid of the codes and the CEL by flashing the PCM WITHOUT me having to by a piece of hardware ?. I have no desire to modify the truck other than to get rid of the codes and the CEL.

More then likely not. Those codes will probably come back due to your having the EGR delete. They might take awhile, but they will come back. The SCT will be a true fix for it. You can have the tune written to where it doesn't add anything other then telling the truck's PCM not to look for sensor data from the EGR system, however, more then likely that's what you are going to have to have done unless you want to be making trips back and forth to have your codes cleared(or by the software to do it yourself).
Do I have to by the hardware or can a diesel shop do it that already has the tune. Ignorance on my part
More then likely you'll have to buy the hardware. Now it is possible that the diesel shop could have software like CarDAQ or PT DIAG(I doubt this one though) or maybe even the tune writting software for the SCT(or equilivant), then it is possible. The point being is that they would have to have something that would be able to deliver the tune to your vehicle that wouldn't "lock" itself to your vehicle and your vehicle only. Now if they can write tunes, then they should also have that software to do that, or atleast they should. I would ask them if they have software and/or hardware that can flash a vehicle.
If not, I would suggest going to Innovative and getting the SCT X3 tuner with an EGR delete tune written for you. Since you are not wanting to do any more modding(atleast at this time) then that would probaby be the most economical choice for you.
Yes, it is possible that the diesel shop could do it for you, I just tend to doubt it though. Not many diesel shops are setup at that level unless they also do a lot of performance as well.
I will add this though, becare incase that shop trys to sell you some other tuner. If it cannot due custom tuning, it won't be a fix for you. I have yet to see products from Banks, Bullydog, Edge etc, that will shut off the EGR sensor(s). I say this, because a lot of diesel shops like to hock those other high ad spenders products and they are marginal at best and won't work in this application(atleast to my knowledge).
