Getting ready to buy a used Expedition and thought I would get some advice & feedback from higher mileage owners as to inherant or reccuring problems. Haven't really zeroed in on a particular year, but probably 99 or newer, 4x4, 5.4L. Milage (& price) seems to be all over the board and there are a lot of used vehicles available. Just trying to narrow the search a bit and get the best deal for the mileage. Thanks for your help!
Judging from prior posts, avoid the '99 4X4 that only has the Auto 4WD setting. My '98 has A4WD, 4L and 4H settings, as well as 2H. I have seen other posts where the users (for unknown reasons to me) have expressed grief in not having the extra settings in the 4X4 switch.
Thanks, hadn't thought or read of that one, but it makes sense.
I guess what I'm really getting at is... am I taking a huge risk by getting one with 50,000+ miles?? Or is the overall reliability generally a safe bet?
Dirt,
With fingers crossed, I will say that the 99 XLT 4.6 w/51k on it that I bought a month ago is great! Spruce green, cloth, 3rd seat, rear air, 17" wheels. I absolutely love it. It pays to know as much about the history of any used vehicle. But I don't feel that 50k is a lot of miles on any vehicle today. Mine has the auto-AWD switch and I have tested it's positions and the switchable 4wd and 4L work. I have not had an occasion to have to have the auto-AWD engage. Until the first snow, we'll not know.
However, I have read thru most of these forums (atleast expy related) and not found complaints about the system. Ford has been doing the auto-locking hub thing for over a decade (I had it on my '90 Bronco II XLT) so one would hope that they have it down by now.
The only issue I have is the torque with the 4.6. It could use a few more lbs/ft. I don't have an issue with where it develops it's power as it is an OHC engine and should be expected to rev a bit more than an old push-rod engine. But if there was a bit more there when the revving took place, I wouldn't mind.
Good luck!
Buy a 5.4 litre vs the 4.6.
I have a '99 EB with the 5.4 and find it to be pretty disapointing on acceleration.
I would think the 4.6 would be a real dog.
if you are still looking for a used expedition... spend a dime and call me. i bought a used one a year ago with 40k miles on it. they are great vehicles... if you have done your homework.

Thanks for all the info! I am in the Kansas City area. I have a '94 Aerostar EB, AWD that I've been driving for the last 2 years. Ford really went WAY beyond the call of duty on a recall issue that arose last year. Long story short, they replaced the front & rear halves of the transfer case and the drive shaft, plus covered the fluids AND two different, rather expensive tow bills...this happened on a trip to Colorado. Anyway, that really sealed the deal with Ford in general.
Anyway, I see a lot of high milage vehicles, off rental, fleets, etc., but would agree that knowing the history would certainly be worth a few extra beans rather than buying some flogged rental!
