Dead Voltmeter???

Dead Voltmeter???

I have a 1990 F150 XLT Lariat 2wd with a 302/AOD and the non-tachometer guage panel. Since I have owned the truck the factory voltmeter has been pegged to the "discharge"(far left) side reading, yet I have had no charging issues. Once in a GREAT while while being driven for long periods(one hour plus) the needle will jump over and read at an acceptable charging rate - however, when the motor is shut off, it will return back to its normal behvior. As far as I can tell, nothing has ever been disturbed and/or butchered in the dash wiring. Any ideas - could it be the gauge itself?? Just wanted some ideas before I begin spending money!!!

I had a similar issue with my '92 F-350. I started to pull the dash cluster when I found one of the connectors on the back of the cluster just about ready to fall out. Snapped it back in, voltmeter works like a charm now.

Thanks for the tip rla2005!! I finally had a chance to work on it this afternoon - cleaned the contacts on both plug ins good and gave them a shot of dielectric grease, replaced all the bulbs(I ALREADY had the cluster out, so when in Rome...) and cleaned the dead spider out of the odometer. Put it back together and it works like new now!!!
