temperature guage
does anyone know where the temp guage hooks up on a 400, currently its screwed into the manifold but a local guy said it might go on the water pump on the top left where there is a little needle

It shouldn't go on the intake manifold, as a 400 has a dry manifold. It's in the block as tinaheels described.
If it's in the intake manifold, someone probably installed it in a vacuum fitting. Make sure you plug it back up.
