I have a 78 styleside 4x4 and I have decided to go in a different direction and use a flareside bed I have. I have the bed primered except the floor which I was going to have a bed liner sprayed in. I was wondering how much I should ask for the bed and the rollbar. I will probably offer it up here and if no takers it will be off to e-bay.
Pics would help...to determine actual shape. But if it's straight and only needs paint, I could see 4-500 for it. I know some guys in areas that use salt would easily put up a grand for a good short bed though.
I can't get on craigslist at work or I'd post a link but on my local craigslist (St. Louis MO), there is a guy selling a short bed- bed only. He describes it as SUPER nice and says he paid $2500 for it. He's asking $2000 firm. And he must have gotten a bunch of trouble about the price because he says something like- for the numb skulls that dont like the price you dont have a clue and just move on.
The bed is in pretty good shape. It does not have any body trim. I have new tail light assemblies including new bezels. I also have new wheel well trim. The rollbar is a single tube design with no lights included. Hey Blown331, if someone wants to pay that much I would paint it for them to match theirs and ship it for free. I will try to get some pics up in the next day or two.
I just paid 1100 dollars for a good straight, clean bed from texas .......I bought it relatively local here in PA........it was the only one I could find, and I must have called 300 places all over the US.......So I think you should take no less than 1000 for it....
I've seen whole rust free trucks go for $2000 or less, I wouldn't pay $1000 for it... even if it was perfect. Not when I can go buy any old bed and reskin it for a fraction of that.

My thoughts exactly...in my area, $500 is about it for a cherry bed be it long or short, flaresides get a tad more. But I can understand northern guys paying more. Especially considering, I can get an entire truck that's straight and a good driver for under a grand.

Not if your bed is totally shot..............and stuff for the short beds is ridiculously priced.................

a fraction of that? maybe 9/10ths
i just did the exact thing you're talking about. if i could find a nice rust free bed for a grand knowing what i know now, i'd snap that thing up in a heartbeat.
I realize it's not a shhortbed, but those are out there too. I'd rather buy a nice complete truck for 2k, than dropping 1000-2000 on a bed alone. Use the good bed, sell the truck or part it out...maybe put a flat bed on it. I guess I'm just spoiled living in the south, because I can find trucks like that all day long.

Damn, that looks like a hell of a deal. I really like that one.
This is just my opinion and maybe I'm wrong but I think a lot of these "rust free" beds are probably about halfway rusted through from the inside. Those damn inner wheel houses hold moisture pretty much forever.
My cousin bought a rust free short bed (bed only) for his 89 F-150. It had a few coats of paint so they striped it to bare metal. Looked great. Well only a few months after paint it rusted through on the one side, and I mean bad. I re-skinned my bed and left the inner wheel houses out. Actually we put in just the very end pieces so those rubber mud flap deals can still go in. Give it some support too.

I live in the south and I don't find good trucks all the time. I see alot of these trucks, but in sad shape, not from rust really but just from being wore out from a hard life.
A shortwheel base is like hens teeth. Been looking for a good(no rust or damage) bed for about a year now. My shortbed was perfect but got side swiped and totally ruined the bed.
Shortwheel base truck with bad bed=totally worthless.
At one point when I was still mad about what happened I considered selling it. Nobody would even begin to make an offer on it with the bed screwed up.

Like I said, I must be spoiled, I could go for a 30 minute drive and come back with 5 maybe 10 trucks like the one I posted. You also have to be willing to travel, the though, the truck I posted is a good 4-5 hours away. And you said you're looking for a bed, start expanding your search radius and look for an entire truck. Hell, if you're really that hard up for a short bed, take a drive to me, I'm always up for meeting members, I know where two good short beds are at right now...they'd need a good tailgate though.
