I just put new tires on my 85 Bronco II and had it aligned. The vehicle was fine until the alignment but I wanted to be sure the tires would last. When I picked it up the steering was off center it would also wander very slowly to the right so I took it right back to the shop. The guy that owned the shop was unhappy to see it back less then an hour after it left. He told me he would correct the centering on the steering but told me the steering box on the Bronco II's have a loose center and that can cause issues with the wandering. I weren't buying it. He re-centered tie rods and set the toe. The steering is now on center but the vehicle still drifts very slowly right. I have checked the tire pressures and rotated the tires to insure the tires are not the problem. The shop owner told me the caster and camber were right on when he had it on the machine.
Said he only had to adjust the toe.
The thing was fine before it went for the alignment............I am thinking the right side tire has too much toe out.........so in reality the toe is not on?
I measured the toe using the old time tape measure method. the toe appears to be set 1/8" in. I am not sure how to find whether the left tire is straight while the right tire is out a bit??
I understand front end alignment really well and can do about anything but I don't have an alignment rack I can put it on. Give me some old time guidance and I'm good to go.
By the way all the front end components are new and tight. I replaced them all a few months back and inspected all the components for wear and don't see anything.
I would appreciate any help in this area??
The steering is now on center but the vehicle still drifts very slowly right.
You know that's normal, right? We design roads to have a crown in the middle for two reasons: drainage, and to keep people that fall asleep while driving out of the other lane of traffic. All cars will tend to drift right. If your vehicle doesn't then the alignment is probably off.
If you didn't ask for a printout of the alignment sheet, ask for one next time. Then you can verify for yourself that the toe is set correctly.
