Black smoke

Black smoke
I was passing a very old, very slow old lady this afternoon on my way back from the adirondak mtns. Had the trailer on and put it about three quarters of the way to the floor. When I got in front of her I let off the fuel some to level out and start cruising again and when I did a huge cloud of black smoke came out of the exhaust for a second, anyone know why?

I don't know any stock 6.4s that smoke. If they smoke as much as a 6.0 they have problems with the DPF. At 58K my tail pipes are as clean on the inside as they are on the outside.
As far as a puff of black one time, I've never seen it and don't have clue as to what might cause it.

yeah, it's got me stumped too. I've noticed on days when the sun is bright you can see it smoke a little when taking off with the trailer on, usually right after it shifts if you give it more fuel it'll smoke some. And I've also seen it smoke very faintly at idle. (again, has to be bright sun to see it.) But today it was a VERY obvious cloud of black smoke. Starting to think that maybe the soot trap has a hole in it, because my mileage is starting to get a little better and regens have been less frequent. I got 10 MPG towing the trailer home today, usually around 9 or less. Needless to say my exhaust tips are totally black.

Yeah, mixed on the black pipes and clean ones. Mine were always squeeky clean, black as night on our 2nd one. Both run slightly different but nothing negative so far.
Time will tell though. The engine and exhaust along with the PCM software are designed to run with a system that keeps ALL soot at bay, clean pipes. Hard to say what will happen when you reach 5 years or 150K miles or more.

mine are still pretty clean, a little grayish is all. Even after the 1588 miles here to colo pulling the 5er.
I would think that it is ok as long as there are no other symptoms.
Keep in mind, if you live were there are emissions inspections then you would certainly want to fix it.
