Hey guys my 89' bronco's 302 runs great, but as of late it sputters at around 1500rpm. It takes about six cranks to start when it is not warmed up too. I was thinkin moisture in the distributer, but maybe fuel filter. The truck has around 169,000 on it. Oh and when it starts there are all sorts of noises like something is loose, or no oil on the rotating parts on initial start-up. Maybe I need a new oil pump too?? Thanks guys!!! My truck idles smoothly at 500 rpm too. Except when it starts sputtering, the rpms go down to 100 then back up to 600. Somethimes it will stall. This just started happening too. Thanks guys!
Check the simple things first. Look for a vacuum leak; that can cause the sputtering.
With so many miles on the car. you should change the fuel filter anyway. But if you can, check the fuel pressure before and after.
As for the engine noises, does your Bronco have an oil pressure gauge? What does it say when you first start up with the engine cold? How about when the engine warms up?
Took the distributer cap off, blew on it, wiped it off an it doesnt sputter anymore. The engine is solid. Man but on start-up the noises are bad. Only on cold starts though. My goal is to get 200,000 out of her! Then a stroker is goin in.
How long have the start-up noises been going on? It sounds like a combination of lots of clearances in the bearings, and the oil filter anti-drain-back valve allowing drain-back.
