Bah!! Rough start and romp romp

Well i did the GPR LED mod yesterday, worked great till i went to leave the beach tonight, turn the ignition on,no led lightin up(I need to check the ground, fuse, etc. still)... Now since i got the truck it's always kinda started rough, but the more i read this sight, the more i notice stuff. So everytime i start,it's a rough 4-5 seconds till she starts, she romps, and a small puff of white smoke will come out.

So,what do i need to do,and or check?? Remember, newB here,so explain in diesel for dummies terms.

You might check the level in your HPOP.. (high pressure oil pump). should be about 3/4" from the top after the truck been sitting for a while.. Remove the black plastic cover over the fuel filter.. In front of the fuel filer housing is the HPOP.. remove the allen screw cap to check level.
Also you could switch to 5w40 syn oil.. would help on the stopping the romp..

Any modifications or is the truck bone stock? Also, how many miles? Just need a reference point.

ICP/HPOP issues are a common cause for romping on startup, especially when dealing with modified HPOP or occasionally an aggressive chip. If the truck is stock, I'd be looking for oil issues or, like clintbonnie said, possibly considering running a different weight oil. As these engines age, they seem to be a bit more particular about oil weight.

Take care.

I wouldn't overlook the obvious also. If your LED isn't lighting up, your relay may be going out - that's why you put the LED on it in the first place. If the relay is not working, your cylinders are dead cold when you are trying to start it which can also cause the romps. Your relay can work intermittently also, don't ask me how I know!

IHOP is a good start if you have already done the GPR. fuel filter clean?

Gee, wonder what's on your mind!? Although I agree... IHOP is always a good place to start. I think better on a full stomach.

I could not agree more. At any rate, you should not need GPs to start the truck this time of year.

You probably need to change your oil and just go synthetic. If you have trouble now you don't even want winter to come. GPs or not, they do nothing for your romps when your ICP and commands are all over the place due to ICP on conventional oil.

Ask me how I know and I will tell you synthetic made my romps go away immediately and I changed oil regularly.

So,change the fuel filter, switch to 5w/40 syn oil from rotella t?

Today the LED lit up all day,but still alot of white smoke,i guess it's just time to switch to the stancor relay.

Also, the truck has 280k,it's probably likely some glow plugs are bad. would some of the glow plugs not lighting cause the white smoke?(which is unburnt fuel right?)

Ouch. Is it like a choo choo thing coming out? Shaking it off is different than blowing it off. Low compression would explain a lot here which equates to blowby.

Blows it off eh? Bummer. When it starts and warms up it may run OK but you are on borrowed time. Sorry but if you have excessive blow by you need to fix that.
