So I know this has nothing to do with ford trucks, but after days of searching lawn mower forums I still cant get the answers I need. I believe that some of the 7.3 pros can help me here. So bascially , my starter on my troy built, peice of junk, riding mower engages but just seems like it doesn't have the nuts to turn it over more than about a quarter turn. Is this a characteristic of weak/bad starter? or timing issue? Any info will be appriciated!!! thanks
Steve
If your battery is charged and all connections clean it realy sounds like the starter is giving up
I did run across one that the relay wasn't passing full voltage
Try jumping direct from battery to the starter, then if it spins you know it's somewhere between
I have a 22 hp Briggs twin that is 2 years old with 100 hours on it. For unknown reasons, it usually smokes upon startup & once in awhile there is enough oil in the cylinders that it hydrolocks - acts like the battery is dead but it's not. I can turn the engine over by hand, through a couple of cycles & then it will spin normally. I have treated this mower right & always changed oil regularly. Been thinking about searching forums to see if this is a common issue. Give this a try.
Thanks Ray, I will check it out. My mower does exactly as he describes. Goes maybe 1/4 turn, then won't turn over any further. Acts like the battery is dead.
Not saying that this is the problem, I had one do that a month ago. Changed battery and no different, changed starter and no different, changed starter solenoid and still no different. Was looking at it a couple of weeks ago and found that the safety switch on the brake peddle was not pressing all the way in. I took it off and jumped the wires and it cranks up fine now. Mine is a John Deere. Worth looking at to see.
