Last Sunday, I went over some rough rr tracks and it died on me. Immediately I smelt something burning and seen some smoke coming from around where the computer is. I peeled back the plastic kick guard to see if I could see something burning, but all I seen was smoke coming out of the front side of the computer. Now, all that happens is it just keeps cranking, but no fire. It will run on ether. Took the fuel pump out today and hooked it directly to battery and it fired right up. Not getting voltage to the pump. Anyone have any idea as to what has happened? Any relay that might have burnt up? If it's a hard fix, I'm thinking about direct wiring to the fuel pump with a switch inside the cab. Need help ASAP, broke down! Thanks.
I assume this truck is fuel injected? If you can hot wire the pump and get it off the road, I would go ahead and do that. There is a test port where you should be able to ground a terminal and make the pump run. Or you can hot wire it anyway that makes it work.
Once you get it home where you can work on it, I would pull the codes out of the computer. The computer controls the fuel pump.
The computer burned up. I do not think it will run with the fuel pump hot wired and the injectors more than likely are not firing also.
The computer can stop spark but is not needed to have spark. So the engine can run with the computer unplugged while spraying starter fluid into the air intake.
You need a tow to get it someplace to replace the computer.
Thanks for the info. I got a tow home and pulled the bed off. Kind of confusing, but we hooked battery leads from my buddy's truck to my battery cables to try and send voltage to pump. At first we had around 8 volts at the pump plug, but not enough to run pump. Then we pulled pump out and direct wired to a fresh battery and the pump seemed to run pretty good. Took the pump back to the tank/plug, and had nothing. So do you think that something in the wiring burnt up or did something in the computer burn up that controls the pump? Think I ought to start with hot-wiring pump to see if truck will run or just go ahead and find another computer?
To test the fuel system you need to turn on the key and short pin #2 to pin #6 of the EEC Self-Test plug. You should hear a click from the fuel pump relay and the selected fuel pump(s) run.
If this is what has just happened the more than likely you have a bad computer.
But you could also have no power to the computer or no ground to the computer.
If you did not hear the fuel pump relay click and the pumps run with the key on and pin #2 to pin #6 of the EEC Self-Test plug shorted then you need run a wire from pin #6 to the NEG post of the battery and see if it clicks now and run the pumps. If this still does not run the pumps then post back and we will help with some more tests. If it did run now you have a bad ground through the computer.
My vote is still for a bad computer as they are not very good after you let the smoke out of them.

I pulled the top of the computer off tonight and noticed a severe burn mark on the edge beside one of the chips. Gave it to my buddy that works in an electronic repair shop to see if he could do anything to it. Probably will end up having to buy a new/used one. Any good deals out there???
The local stores sell them. The hard part is getting the correct one with the correct long Ford part number on it. So don't let your guy throw it away.
My buddy won't be back to work until Monday, so I'll have to wait until then to find out if it is salvageable. Don't hurt to try. Thanks for your help and suggestions. Right beside the broken down Ranger is an 88 Crown Vic ready for a big derby next Friday. FORD TOUGH!
