I put 203,000 on my 01 Tranny without any problems. I put the BTS in cause I thought I might need it. The tranny was still working great. I've never even checked the tranny Fluid in my 05 142,xxx miles & 06 131,xxx miles.
Boy do I feel awkward! I had a tranny burn up in another vehicle because of poor sevice. I thought the transmission service interval on the 05 PSD was 15000 and the dealer didn't tell me it wasn't neccessary or thought that I needed it. I am thinking of selling my PSD after a $2000 repair and a no confidence statement from the local Ford service manager. Do you have horror stories regaurding the 05 and 06 you have? If not, what are you doing and if it nothing, I will jump off the roof!

You may be lucky like me and find a **** 7.3 with a built sun coast transmission and lift and all the cool things. Put a little programmer on it and it will out run a STOCK 6.0. I have a hypertech programmer on stage 2 (I know its a crappy tuner but came with the truck) and it pulls harder then my relatives stock 6.0 dually unloaded. When towing the dually has the gearing advantage but you can still tell engine wise that the 7.3 has more power. However this is a 7.3 with tuner vs a stock 6.0. If you do decide to get the 6.0 just leave it stock.
The 7.3 I drove looked great and sounded great but it was anything but quick either 0-60 or on the freeway. I would bet my 5.4 was much quicker than that 7.3.
Gotta honk the bs meter on that..Are you talking stock or did the dealer even know?
Quote :I have heard that the 7.3 with auto were not always reliable.
That is correct. They had the dreaded mechanical diode up until build date of 04/01 ( I think) that would crap out, I know because I replaced my tranny at 160k. I knew it was a matter of time so it wasnt a huge shock. On the other hand I know some people here that werent affected by it.
I wanted to post it in famous thread V10 vs PS, but since this is already here..
So I just had totally opposite experience than OP.
My 99 F450 with 7.3 blow the differential and I rented 2004 F550 with 6.0 (?) for towing.
I love the newer engine for much less noise, love the cabin for door pocket, looks like top mounted oil filter might be a nice thing, but what a crap the power-train it is.
I almost cost few accidents when the 6 liter coupled with automatic would not move me through intersection before the cars from the side zoomed by. I backed up for the night at motel driveway and with 14k trailer the engine would NOT pull up in the morning. Reving up to 1500 rpm it had no torque to move anything. I had to back up on flat spot and gain some momentum to take the grade.
The thing would drop 2 gears on freeway overpass, while I seldom downshifted my manual even on pretty steep grades.
Coming to mpg, haven't seen them that low since I quit driving gas powered trucks
The rented truck has 40k on it, mine 240k.

Well I know that I can get on the freeway and up to speed faster than that 7.3 and I don't have to stand on the gas pedal.
I will know more tomorrow after I have it checked out. Automatics scare me, but I will have to deal with it. The only automatic I have ever owned was an Allison on a Chevy HD and it was okay, but the truck I am looking at is auto, so I will have to deal. It is more convenient, but I don't know about long term durability. I want something that will last the life of the engine.
Not really, but only because I need to stay around 15K. I like the 08 body style, but they are still just a bit too new and thereby expensive.
My ideal truck would be a reg cab 250, FX4 4x4, diesel, ZF6, XL trim, vinyl seats, A/C, and not white. I have found it in this truck with the exception of the manual transmission and reg cab, so I am really going after it. I hope everything checks out.

I haven't serviced the tranny on either. I've done nothing but drive them hard. The only things that didn't come on the 05 is the batteries, oil and tires. I did have the EGR Valve and the Turbo replaced under Warranty on the 06.
Well, I took the 6.0 to the dealer and had an Oasis report run, found that it had the EGR valve changed twice, had an issue with the 4WD transfer case that was fixed, a transmission issue that was fixed under recall(?), and a few other times that the truck was brought in and no issues found. The truck was checked over and found to need ball joints and brakes. The seller was not interested in fixing those items, and was low balling my trade, so I passed. I am going to look at the 02 7.3 again and have it checked out tomorrow. It has 202K on it but is in great shape. No GN/5th, so any towing the truck has done was bumper pull, but even that looks doubtful.
And where in the hell is my grab handle for the driver side? Did they forget these in 02!?
