Just can't get ahead!

Today my 86 engine developed a noise in the valves.
It seems a washer for the air cleaner stud broke in half and fell in the carb. It got sucked into a valve.
I was just going for the mail when the gas pedal stuck. I kicked it diown and it was fine. About a 1/4 mile later got a loud ticking from the engine. I could hear it in the valve. Drove the truck home careful. Noise got quieter.
As I was going over the engine. I saw the spacer washer was broken. About a 1/4 of it was still sitting on the carb. The rest must of fell in and got into a valve.
Now I have to do a major haul of the heads to fix them. I just can't get ahead.
I have so much stuff to fix around here. I just finished the dog kennel, now Houdini cannot escape.
I have to finish the west side of the roof on the house with metal roofing. I have a half built shed and suspose to build another one. The Taurus I need to change the leaky rad. Have new replacement. Just have to spend a day. The list goes on and on. Then something breaks that takes priority.
It never seems to let me get ahead to have my shop back and work or the stress relieving projects. My trucks and cars.
I just had to rant.
Now to find time to fix the truck and the coin. Just at wrong time. as always.

I'm just hoping it is just a valve and a seat. Since I will be taking the heads off. I will get new guides put in also. As long as it did not work into the cylinder. I was only a 2 miles from home. Got it home and parked it.
I still have my 85 truck to fall back onto. But it needs work. The rear springs are soft and the front end clunks in the suspension.
Got the parts trucks to swap some things out of for the 85. Besides I like my 300 I6 engine. It needs a good tune up.

Running those older vehicles as daily drivers will nickel and dime you to death! ****ty fuel milleage, and constant repair will either keep you broke if you pay someone to fix it or keep you from getting anything else done if you do it yourself!

Money here is so tight. My pay cheques are $400 less a month than they were a year ago. Thanks to SAHO. They have increase employee deductions and bulling us to settle a contract. So they are increase our payments to health. Example is parking went from $36.00 a month two years ago now to $108.00 a month for staff parking. Then send a letter to us saying there was a 10% increase to the cost of parking rates. Then in the same same letter say they are now charging an infrustruture rate on top of that.
They make nearly a million a month in parking from staff and clients.
So buying a new truck is not an option. Trying to pay even $100 for a part or something around the house. puts me behind. New truck payments of $300 a month are just too much when I now take home less than 2000 a month. Mortgage, utilitys , grocery's and gas to drive. Takes a big chunk. Some paydays I have $200 left til next payday. That is spread out for gas.
So a break down will set me back, but I will get oover it. The other thing the older truck is paid for. If repairs only come once or twice a year. They sure outbeat a car loan payment. Just the timeing is wrong.

Well I will get it fixed before summer is over. Just other things around here are taking priority right now.
Like I said the timing of the situation does not help.
One thing is afterwards th top of the engine will look a lot more cleaner. LOL

I totally agree. with shop rates near or above 100/hr, anything other than an oil change seems like its 2g in a hurry. it took me some hard thinking to swallow the new truck payment, but let me tell you, the peace of mind knowing that you're driving a solid unit with warranty is well worth the payment. it only takes 1 or 2 repairs a year to equal what a vehicle payment would cost you. doing the repairs yourself? still have to buy parts, still taking your prescious time that you should/could be doing other things...

Lets see. $40,000 for a truck. Plus another $20,000 in interest. When paid in full only valued at about $15,000. All in a 5 year period. Not an invetment. Just an expensive peace of mind.
In my household we cannot afford that high of a peace of mind. I rather have that money go to my house.
Good thing is I can do most of the work myself. I also get my parts at shop cost most of the time.

Like changing the rad today on the Taurus. Got easy quotes up to a $1000 to have shops change it and that is me providing a replacement rad which is another $400.
So I'm doing it myself. while on days off here. Maybe next week will tackle the truck.

I see both sides of this, both have their merits.
