1986 4-5speed conversion
I have an 86 F350 Diesel that i would like to change the tranny in from the 4speed to a 5speed. I do a lot of highway driving and want to leave it a little easier on her. Any thoughts on what would be an inexpensive way to go about this?.. do they make a 5speed that would bolt rite up to it or an overdrive for the 4speed?... Thanks, Frank
Just so you know you have posted in the 2009 and newer F150 section of the forums.

The above link will take you the section dedicated to your model generation of truck, ask your question there and they should be able to help you faster and easier there.
Again welcome.
You will need one for a 6.9 or 7.3 idi diesel. This tranny comes with a integral bellhousing made into it so you can't re-use your bellhousing, and the diesel has a odd-ball bell pattern, so you have to get one from a idi diesel.
I would go ahead and get a new clutch kit for it. The zf came with a dual mass flywheel which had springs and clutches inside it, and can give some trouble. They make conversion kits to convert the zf to a solid flywheel, and a bigger clutch.
From reading on here, I believe the 4 speed and the zf are very close to the same length, so everything else should bolt up. My swap involved a c6 automatic, and it was a little bit different length.
