I have a 2004 6.0L with 95k miles. Had 1 injector fail a year ago and had it replaced. Had 2 more fail 1 month later, had those replaced. About a month ago had another injector fail, once again had that replaced as well. Yesterday it was running a little funny so took it to the shop and hooked up to the computer. The computer was reading 2 blown injectors. So i took it home. This morning started it up for work and ran fine. No problems. But this afternoon while i was doing about 40 or 50 mph it started to bog down. So i slid it in neutral revved it up to clean it out and when it went back to idle, bogged down and shut off. Pulled over and tryed restarting and it was blowing a MASSIVE amount of white smoke. So i stopped turning it over. Waited 10 minutes and tryed restarting it and wouldnt crank over. What do you guys think the issue might be? injectors, injector pump, fuel pump, head gasket or possibly worse Blown motor? im just guessing cause I dont know. Thanks
When you say wouldn't crank over, does the starter turn the engine and it just not start, or when you engage the starter does it not turn the engine at all making it seem like it's seized?
It sounds like your EGR cooler broke and flooded the engine with coolant. Coolant doesn't compress so it locks up. It's also possible I guess that an injector dumped a whole lot of fuel in a cylinder locking the engine. So you need to verify, *DO NOT TRY TO START THE TRUCK*.
Pull out your EGR valve, is there coolant in there? If there is then you lost your EGR and it needs to be replaced. If it's all dry in there, then you'll have to pull out the glow plugs. Once all plugs are out, the engine should spin over and you should be able to see which GP hole had fuel in it. Either way, don't attempt to start the truck until you determine what is going on.
I pulled the dipstick right after it happened and no it didnt have coolant on it or smell like it. And theres still plenty of coolant in resi so i dont think it i blew the head gasket because i would lose a decent amount of coolant into the motor?
Pull the EGR valve and check for coolant in there. If it's dry, you'll have to pull out the glow plugs (which you'll have to do anyway to unlock the engine), then spin it over to see which cylinder has liquid in it. If the liquid is coolant, then it's EGR cooler, if the liquid is fuel then it's an injector. If the engine doesn't turn over with the glow plugs out, then it's far more serious.
I wouldn't expect coolant in the crankcase with a bad EGR cooler.
ok first off is the degas bottle empty? if not you may be ok on the egr cooler crap that everyone is screaming.
if it is empty then they may have something.
its also possible to have hydrolocked a cyclinder with fuel from a failed injector(s).
time to pull glowplugs and vent the cyclinders.
you need to figure out what liquid is filled the cyclinders and what cyclinder is venting fluid.
if its fuel the cyclinder that has vented the liquid has the failed injector. if this is the case replace both the injector and the hold down on that cyclinder.
