Question Dreaded Coolant Smell

Even when my truck was new I would get a whiff of coolant when towing up hills. Never any leaks around the degas. When at the dealers for maintenance I've had them note the coolant several times while under warranty and they were unable to reproduce the smell. Now at 91k while driving to Yuma, Az unloaded through the hills it constantly smelled of coolant. When I went back to Cali it dd it again. Now the degas bottle has residue. Coolant level is no lower than usual. Read varios threads on problem. Is it EGR cooler or head studs?

You need eot/ect readings. No offense but no clairevoyants here. Could also be degas bottle cap. There is an upgraded one that's been available for a year or two.

Sorry about that. I assumed you could read minds. Anyway, the guages all read normal no over heating or anything. Just that sweet nauseating smell. Not over powering just enough to let you know it's there. Now I find myself sniffing at the vents to see if it's me or not.

OCD I know.

What are the eot/ect readings? You need a/m gauges for this. Also do you have the upgraded degas cap. Only about 8 bucks.

I suppose I'll have to run it by the dealer when I head back to Cal. Wife has the truck there. I'll buy the newer cap first off.

Is it still under warranty Will? If not I've got a recommendation for a good shop if you don't mind driving over to San Jacinto.

No warranty left. I was going to discuss this with the Rep since I have had it noted many times while still in warranty and they F'ed it away. Now I am sure that it will be a must repair immediatly since it is on my dime.

I don't mind driving to San J to talk to a pro.

Check for the updated blue hose on the EGR cooler, when it fails it spills coolant on top of the motor to cook or drain down the back of the motor.

Good point but the egr cooler hose would not cause the degas bottle to puke.

my new rad cap, installed 2-3 days ago, is from Ford and the part # is RS*527* Is this the updated cap? Puked the day after, and I get the same thing...I can smell the coolant, but I can also obviously see it's puked from the degas bottle ( i keep calling it the coolant resevoir).

So is there also an updated or after-market thermostat that a guy should consider?

My O4 was doing some puking and blowing a bit out the degas last year. Turned out to be the oil cooler plugged with casting sand and what little fluid was getting to the egr would flash to steam and burp. Also caused the engine fine to inguage constantly when pulling any kind of load. Replaced the oil cooler and no more problems. Also freeze plugged the egr.
