The fan is controlled by the pcm and it is a modulated hall effect type of signal. If it is not functioning properly you need to determine the cause. The days of on/off power has left the barn.

If everything is working properly the factory set-up should keep your truck plenty cool. If the truck is running hot you should find out the root cause. Follows are a couple of recent threads that will provide some additional details on the operation of the fan and why it not a good idea to modify the controls. As 69cj explained there is much more to the operation of the fan than simply turning it on and off based on a thermostat.

Well it might actually not need to run depending on what's going on when you are going up that hill. I haul around areas with a good bit of elevation, hauling significant amounts of weight, in areas that have pretty high ambient temps and my fan has only come on a handful of times.

I don't know what you exact situation is, but just based only on what you have typed, there might not be any reason for it to come on at all.

Keep in mind that engine temperature isn't the only parameter used by the PCM to determine fan operation. Most people see some variation in engine temperature vs fan operation.

What else does it use? OT or tranny temp? Or something?

The PCM uses ECT, transmission fluid temp, and intake air temp parameters to determine fan operation. A pulse width modulated signal is then output to a fluid port on the fan drive to regulate speed. The fan also has a hall effect sensor used to provide speed feedback to the PCM. As 69cj said before the days of simple fan operation are in our rear view mirror.

welcome! If your that deep into the truck, it would be silly to not replace the oil cooler IMO. They are "relativley" inexpensive and can save you headache down the road.

on our 3rd Ex and 2nd 6oh, would guess we have heard the fan come on just a handful of times since the 1st 2002.... every time it scared the stuffings out of us

IIRC, it was usually sitting at a light in the Texus heat, with cars all around, and both ac's blasting... guess I play the audio books, radio, etc. loud enough when moving that we don't hear it !

Maybe having all the exhaust from others around it makes it hot enough to blast on for a few seconds and then it goes off just as quickly... and never stays on once we start moving...

I agree 100% about changing the oil cooler. They cannot be cleaned internally which is where the problem lies. If the truck is a late 04 build you might look into updating the stc fitting in the hpop system while there also.

I thought the stc fitting in the hpop system was not a problem until 2005?
