I use simple green and a water hose to clean mine. Don't do this on a hot engine, wait till it is just warm. You may need to use a paint brush to get the gunky stuff off. Here is my engine using this procedure.
I sprayed mine down with SuperClean, let it soak but not dry up, and then used the garden hose to mist it down. I was very careful to avoid any direct spraying. As soon as I was done I fired it up and drove it to dry it off. Looks good as new.
Don't spray your engine while it is hot wait for it to just be warm.
Don't use a power washer.
Do you something to cut the oil and grease.
DO drive it immediately after you clean it to dry everything out.
I just drive to the car wash, open the hood, spray down with engine cleaner, spray down with soap, spray down with water, close hood, start engine and drive off.
It's funny, I do this all the time with just Simple Green and a garden hose. Last time though the coil went bad on the wifes 3.0l Taurus afetrwards... Oh well
Have been washing my engines with water for 3 decades.
Older gasoline engines would get their high voltage wires wet occasionally and I had to drive with a cylinder or 2 out of work for some distance before the engine heat would dry the water out. Not a problem with diesel.
If you do wash you engine regurally, no cleaners are necessary. I park my vehicle after driving to cool down a bit and 5-10 minute later wash it.
Since I work on my vehicles it is part of making my job way easier.
