I've got an '03 F250 6.0 and I've removed the EGR system with a complete delete system from River City Diesel. I've loved everything about it for the last 6 months. About 1 week ago I got a CEL and had the mechanic here at work check it with his ODBII. He checked it and cleared the CEL. He said it was something EGR related but didn't go into detail as he didn't have much time. Within 2 days my CEL was on again. Why do you think it is now coming on after so long of being off? Any / all advice is appreciated.
Alright...my friend checked the codes and I'm getting the following:
P0683
P0403
P0405
He thinks the P0683 is triggering the CEL. Any ideas? Is it my GPCM? If so, isn't there a replacement relay (Mouser Electronics?) that you can install that is beefier than the OEM unit? Please advise...Thanks
P0683 - Glow Plug Control Module to PCM Communication Circuit
This isn't EGR related. I'm assuming it is set when the PCM has trouble communicating with the GPCM. The GPCM is much more than just a relay. On the 7.3 there was just a simple relay activated by the PCM. On the 6.0, the GPCM not only powers the glow plugs but monitors them to make sure they're working and stuff. I'm not sure if this code is related. If you're not having cold start problems, I think I'd clear it and see if it comes back.
P0403 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Control Circuit
P0405 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor A Circuit Low
Since you no longer have an EGR valve, the PCM can't find the signals from it that it is expecting. Did you recently have a flash upgrade? As I understand it, older PCM software pretty much ignored those codes. Newer PCM software set a CEL because of those codes. People with newer PCM software have had to have this feature turned off via programming, usually involving a tuner and custom tunes.
Put truck back to stock. Erase codes. Happy motoring!!
I appreciate your wisdom...but I would never go back to stock configuration. I'd drive forever with this CEL on before putting my truck's EGR system back on...
I have the CEL erased and will wait and see if it happens again before committing to an action plan.
