rear diff, front diff, transfer case

My front and rear diff / transfer case need the fluids changed and I want to get my facts together so I can buy the right stuf and get it done.

I would like to know what I need (I know i am going ot buy everything from Ford but what to get and how much to get would be great info.

also im sure I can figure out where the fill plugs are on the diff's but any pics / help would be appreciated. Also im not sure exactly how to to the transfer case....

Thank you

Your owners manual will tell you what and how much you need.

Around 3 quarts of 75W-90 synthetic diff oil for the front. No drain plug. Either remove the cover to drain or suck it out with a vacuum pump. Fill plug on driver side of diff.

Around 4 quarts of 75W-130 synthetic diff oil for the rear. No drain plug. Either remove the cover to drain or suck it out with a vacuum pump. Fill plug on passenger side of diff.

Around 3 to 4 quarts of synthetic ATF for the transfer case. Both fill and drain plug are on the back of the Xfer case. Drain plug at the bottom and fil plug about half way up.

I used Royal Purple synthetic diff oil and Synchromax manual tranny fluid for the Xfer case.

If you use synthetic diff oils you do not have to add the 4oz bottle of limited slip additive.

Use black Permatex. I normally let everything set-up overnight before I refill with fluid. But that's just me.

The tech folder on the Superduty forum has links to good how-to info on all three of those items. Suggest you take a look.

I wouldn't get ANY of the supplies for this job from Ford. JMHO.

You can scrape the gasket and use a new OEM gasket.

or

You can use the Permatex black Right Stuff. I used this when I changed the fluid the first time. Bolted the cover on and filled her right up with fluid. Never had a leak.

My OEM covers are no in China and I now have the Mag-Hytech aluminum high capacity front and rear diff covers that have embedded O rings for seals. Sweet!

There are no gaskets on either diff. It is silicone from the factory.

Also, Permatex has a new silicone RTV sealant specifically intended for diff covers. I haven't used it yet, but that's what I would choose.

I used Amsoil for the diffs and transfercase. Once I had the new fluid in the sound was not as pronounced with 4X4

Hi DSMMH,

I have an automatic tranny and it states to use Mercon V ATF for the Xfer case. Can Synchromax manual tranny fluid be used or is it for 6.0's with manual trans?
