I might be buying an AOD Tranny to replace my 3 on the tree. I was wondering what gears I should put in it? If I am not able to ge the AOD I am going to get a C4 if I get the C4 what gears should I get in it? Also where would be a good place to start looking for a C4 besides the Buy and Sell.
I want an automatic tranny with good gears for a 302, I want good acceleration, I am not going to be towing anything. I just want somthing that is fun to play arround with. Thanks in advance.

Do you mean gears in the tranny itself? If so I'm not sure there are any options on those boxes. The C-6 can accept two different first gear sets. All are one to one high gear.
If I was going to do The swap like you, I'd ditch the C4 in favor of the c6 for the extra strength, as for a good all around rearend gear, 3:55's should do ok in either of the 3.
What gears you should use depends on your engine power and outside tire diameter. The more power, torq, you have the taller the tire you can run with any given gear. It also depends on your driving style. I know a guy who runs 3.73 with 40" denman groundhawgs, and doesn't seem to have problems. With a 302 and a auto trany gears between 3.5:1 and 4.11:1 should do fine with tires between 28-33". Again it all depends on you type of driving and engine power range.
Racerdave:before i state my opinion and contradict anyone I have to ask what you are gonna do with your truck, just cruise the locals or have fun where you aren't supposed to be?
ok. my 78 has a 302, aod, and 9" rearend, with 3:50 gears.and 235/75 15"S...... for mild towing, and flat areas, this is great,.... decient go... great milage..... but where i live there's lots of hills.... and since i bought my grandmarquis. then f-100 isn't on the highway nearly as much..... i personally think the 4:10's would suit me much better, and at 65 mph, i'd be turning 2400 rpms. which is just in the range for the 302. i'm turnin 2000 rpm now, with the 3:50's.. for all around, i'd go with 3:73's if you can find them, and 4:10's if you plan to work it.
btw, i've just completed my 3rd install of a 302, and aod in these truck... 77 f-100, 78 f-100, and a 66 f-250 with 4:10's. but it's not road leagal yet to see how it works.
I hate to smooch in on someone else's thread. The only bull, your truck only turns 2k with the 3.50's? I have the same tires as you with "supposedly" 2.75's and i turn 2300 at 65mph. Could i have different gears? What ratio do you suppose?

About that.... the second one.... I want somthing I can play with when I want to. Somthing that gets me off the line quick. Not a raceing tranny = To much money. Just somthing I am going to like to drive? By the way I have a 302 and this is Not an off road truck, I plan to make this truck into a street truck, nothing offroad. so big tires are out of the question.
Also I am going to be doing ZERO towing with my truck.

P.S. 1979 f100 w/ 302 C-4 tranny p235 70 15's
joetee10, i have the AOD(automatic overdrive) tranny, 2000 rpm is in the .67 to 1 od gear
it turns closer to 2400 in drive, 3rd gear, 1:1, same as your c-4, this is actually at 105 km/h... just took a rough guess at the mph also, your tires are a lower profile.... it's not much, but it would make them a little smaller od, and chang your rpm's a little.
dave, i'd say that you'd be happy with the AOD, and 4:10 gears. still very drivable on the highway, fairly decient mileage, and lots of bottom end.... good for play... i drove mine for 2 years with the aod, and 2:73's....... that was a little painfull, but great on gas... lol i've got 400,000 km's on my tranny and it's still goin strong.
