It seems I remember there were two different designs where the case bolts to the bellhousing.
Can someone expand on the differences and applications.
Does one give more floor/firewall clearance than the other.
Maybe I'm not remembering this right and they are all the same.
All info appreciated.
I can't speak for the case to the bellhousing design, but I do know there is an early bellhousing to engine pattern, and a later pattern. I think it changed in 66 or something. I'm sure NumberDummy could fill you in.
I have two different ones. 66 galaxy , six bolt , 289, pan fill.
78 granada, six bolt 302, case fill.
I have them both in my shop and I think the size is about the same.
The pan fill uses a little more room up on the right side with the dipstick tube. They both use the same size flexplate. firewall at lowest point may have a little more room with the later year.
Richard, I can't bring pictures up in the post, but if you go to my album and click on the 79 f-100 , there are pictures there. I took some from above and some from the right side so you can look at them and see the difference. There is some but if there is room I believe the case fill is the way I would go. I had that old pan fill behind the 302 in my 79 before i changed it all over to a 460 and c/6.
IIRC, the early version has bolts that go into the bellhousing through the main case from the outside. The later version has bolts that go into the case from inside the bellhousing to attach the two pieces together. I thought the changeover was sometime in the early 70's. Size and clearance wise, there won't be any significant differences.
Thanks for the replies.
I was not sure if there was any size/clearance differences between the two.
I will go for the case fill design that seems more available and maybe a little more compact.
Second question.
What is the size/clearance differences between a C4 and a AOD?
Ok I have a question for you guys. I went and looked at the site mcdonaldm posted a link for and got really confussed. I have a C4 and it has the 26 spline input shaft (if thats the shaft in the middle that pulls out from of the bigger shaft the torque converter sits on) the numbers on the ID tag are PEE AK5 F3B and under that it has D4DDA, does anyone know what all that means or possibly what it came out of. I'm planning on ordering me a new tranny from TCI but I want to make sure I'm getting the correct tranny. All help is greatly appreciated...
