I have the XL trim (Cheap) headlights and would like to upgrade to the XLT and higher trim level lights. Does anyone know if this is a direct swap and what would be needed other that the headlight housings?
As far as I know , or am aware , this should be a direct swap. I believe all you need is to get a set of the actual headlamps , and that should be it.....
The difference is that when the XL headlights go bad you have to replace the whole headlight. In the XLT and up you just replace the bulb and thats it.

If your talking about the XL rectangular lights with the grey bezel, yes you can install the euro lights they just screw right in. There is even a pig tail inside the light housing that lets the old ugly lights plug into the euro light socket. Ford figured all trucks would get the euros and supplied a pig tail for the cheapies... Go figure.
The swap out takes about ten minutes. Don't forget to get some clear corners to go woth the new lights.
Hope this is what you were looking for...

I bought mine straight from the Ford dealer. I think they were around $275 for the both. Picked up the clear corners on EvilBay for only $15.00. Shop around, when you do get the lights try to get the '02 and obove they are a lot nicer than the older ones.
'99 - '03 will fit, but again the newer ones are clearer and I think they reflect the light better. Should tell ya one more thing, depends on where you live, the clear corners on mine are clear all the way around, the DOT apoved clear lights have an amber reflector that is on the side blinker. Look at a new truck and you'll see what I'm talking about. Some of those cowboy cops with nothing better to do than ruin your day will ticket you for the non DOT approved lights. Where I live I don't think they care everyone runs 'em. The DOT apporved lights are a little more expensive.
Good luck
