Brade drum question

About 3 months ago I took my truck to my local tire place to have some brake work done. They replaced my front pads and calipers, and back shoes and drums. Well, I pulled the wheel off of the rear passenger side to check my leaf spring and this is what I found. Could a brake drum look like this after only 3 months or did they just not replace it? I've dealt with these guys for years and never had any problems with them before. Anyway, I'd appreciate your opinions on this. Thanks.

My guess is yes - the centers where the wheel shielded the drum from water and possibly some salt left over on the roads looks unaffected. Heat from braking + water + a little salt will rust exposed surfaces pretty rapidly.

Yea, I would have to agree with 5.0B2. They could look like that in a short time. But, you never really know, do you?

Corrosion protection isn't something most people think about with brake drums. I'd ignore the external rust and look internally to see how worn the drum is. That's the only thing that really counts. If you don't like the rust, then sandblast it and paint it with some heat resistant paint.

Yeah, I'll probably check inside the next chance I get to make sure the inside looks OK. The rust on the outside doesn't bother me at all if it's nothing that'll effect the drum in anyway. I just wanted to make sure this is common after only a few months of wear before going to accuse anybody of anything. Thanks for all your help guys.
