whats your timing at with the spout connector removed? have you checked fuel pressure at the rail both with the key on and with the engine running? have you replaced the fuel filter recently?
when you replaced the timing chain did you make sure that cylinder 1 was at TDC and then align the timing marks on the timing gears? what brand spark plugs are you using and what are they gapped to?
You mentioned something about the throttle position screw. this is not to be adjusted or touched. if you have this could very well be part of the problem also. Ford Fuel Injection has info on setting that. if i recall you need to unplug the IAC and then adjust the throttle screw till the rpms are at 650 and then shut down the vehicle and plug the iac back in and start it back up.
Timing is dead on ten before w/spout removed. Computed timing falls a little short of base +20, but not much. I am waiting on the neighbor to get his fuel pressure tester back. Both fuel filters were replaced at the same time, @ 8 thousand miles ago. Timing chain was aligned correctly. They are Motorcraft plugs gapped @ 0.44. I will have to revisit the throttlebody, It had been adjusted to bring the TPS vref back in line, since there is no real adjustment on the TPS itself. I am looking at the procedure in Alldata now, it doesn't say to disconnect the IAC, but it does spec @ 650 to 675.
check out fordfuelinjection.com , great info there and may help in this situation. is that a motorcraft tps or an off brand? ive seen plenty come from the store bad.
Motorcraft was backordered went I went to get it, so I pick up a Standard unit. They were a good unit when I sold that kind of stuff, lets hope that stays true...lol. Thanks again. I have using that site a lot the past few days, ton of info in there.
The demon has been vanquished it seems. After restting the base idle as best i could with the surege, checking the main grounds and finding a few variances, I added a few grounds, to the body and the motor. It still ran just as funky, so I swapped in a spare 86 5.0 w/tow ecm we had sitting around and that seems to have done the trick. No more surge/hunt, the motor sounds and feels stronger. It will even break the tires loose now. No stumble, no breakdown. no bucking or missing under load. Now we'll find out in a couple weeks how much better she pulls the trailer.
