After trying unsuccessfully to buy an OEM radio(don't buy stuff thru Internet),I have decided to chop up the dash for a CD player. What have you guys done? Weld reinforcement? Build custom plate? The metal plate that holds the radio doesn't seem large enough for the DIN face CD player.
Hi let me give you my 2 cents.. what I did on my 76 F-150 is I cut the bottom of the bracket off and took 2 pieces of metal and screwed it to the brace and then to the side of the opening on the metal.. My new Alpine used a cage (DIN) type mounting.. and I just mounted the cage to the Bezel and wired it up.. works great.. the braces make the bracket a lot stronger than you think.. Let me know if ya have any questions and I will try and help ya..

I have done this radio conversion on my 76. I used the original bracket. Using a mig welder I reinforced the lower corner areas. I then marked off a pattern the size of the cage and then cut it out. It took a little patience to decide exactly where to mark for the hole I needed to cut out, but it worked out great. The hole that I cut into the dash panel will be hard to explain. The dash was already modified so badly I had to use some black epoxy fuser to fill it back in in order to have something to cut out. I have a nice fitting radio and it looks professionally done since it fits so nicely.
i did mine the quicker way on my 79 bronco, i marked the cage of on the stock frame, took a die grinder and cut just inside the mark's, then filed til it fit tight, just watch doing the marking on the stock mount outside of the dash, cause what looks even outside isn't when mounted, but hey it's a bit uneven, but it works.. matches the 4x4ing battle wounds on fenders too..
I can relate to your problem. I'm still trying to find a good, working AM/FM OEM for my 77. Got another yard to check out as soon as the weather warms just a little.
I wondered about the opening lining up,doesn't really look in-line. Really just want some FM,too old to figure out how to operate these fancy radios. Truck hasn't been cut so I need to do a decent job.Maybe I 'll keep listening to the mudgrips.
