I am planning on adjusting the timing chain tomorow as i have the day off. I have been told by adjusting it you can increase horsepower. I need to know what the timing is set at now and what i must change it to to increase horsepower. Thanks
What you want is a pre 72 429 timing set doesn't matter who makes it as long as it's a double roller! I always buy them for a 1970 429 that way there's no confusion it's pre retard after 1971 they retarded the crank 8 degree's for emissions. now when you go to install it the crank gear will have three key way's you can install it on,there all marked one will have a square above the key way one a diamond and one a zero, put it on the zero! then point your marks together and life is good. now when you get it all together and your ready to start it, have a good advance curve timing light available so you can set your timing I all ways set mine to 8 degree's btdc. now when your done doing that let your engine warm up to op temp and set your total timing to do this you run your idle up to about 3200 rpm's this should be where you vacume advance and your mechanical advance are as far as there going to go. Now check your timing again start out at zero on your timing light and slowly turn the **** until you see the total timing on your marker on you engine it will probably be more than what I'm going to tell you to set it at. some say no more than 36 degrees and some say no more than 32 , I go 34
