I just got a 95 F250 with the 351 E4OD and this truck drives me nuts with all the shifting it does. I have been driving manuals my whole life so this is all new to me. Is there a computer chip or trans command I can get to stop this nonsense. I drive 17 country miles to work every day and its all rolling hills and the dumb thing down shifts for every one of them no matter how small, and I know it dont need to. I should just drop a ZF in it and call it a day. RB
First, are your tires taller than stock? Is your rear-end stock? If you have the (likely) 3.55 geared rear, then shifting out of OD on load isn't uncommon. Also check your trans fluid level. (Stupid to say, but you'd be surprised...)
There are only 4 gears in an E4OD, not five or six as you may be used to driving a stick, so the trans has to keep the engine in its power band. Overdrive is a pretty low gear for the 3.55 axle. Try driving with the OD button out (OD off) and see if this changes the way the truck drives or makes a substantial change in your mpg. I'll bet your mpg won't change a bit.
For example, I have the 3.55 rear, but am running 33" tires. I want 4.10s badly, but the cost (including the front axle) vs the power gain just doesn't add up. I rarely let the truck go into OD - especially not when towing or pulling any kind of load. If I'm on the highway going faster than, say 65, level ground, in light traffic, I'll let it go into OD. But that's not very often.

Its got stock tires and 350 gears. Its generally turning about 1600 RPM on the flat and jumps to 2600 up the hills. The truck is empty with only me in it. I'd love a switch I could flip that would hold it in OD so I could labor the engine a little. Sure wouldnt hurt it any. RB
