Here it is, wife was going down the freeway got behind a swoop and stop person. she hit the brakes hard and turned to avoid (which she did) but now our 02 explorer has this grinding noise coming from it when starting and stopping and turning sharp. i can't figure this one out. need some help from what it might be. thanks charlie
without the crystal ball, I would check for a front wheel bearing... causing a brake or dust cover to scrape..
sorry i just read my o.p. the noise is coming from the rear and it feels like it drags until we go straight it mainly does it when turning. thats why i'm confused to what it is, i'm a fairly decent mechanic and i am baffled at this one and cant find it in any of the tech manuals i have for trouble shooting certain drive train problems.

by the way when you get the crystal ball will you ask it for me? lol thanks for the input i'll check the wheel bearings and dust shields in the morning.
I'd take off the rear wheel, carefully inspect the rear brakes, and if all looks fine, pull the rotors where you'll probably find that the brake lining material has separated from the parking brake shoes.

That would be my guess. See it allot with the vehicle parking brake setups like that after they get 7 to 10 year old. Those shoes are pretty pricey for as little as they are.
i haven't pulled the wheels yet but it sounds like the p brake springs have busted and now the shoes are hanging up inside their teeney tiny little drums.
