new engine, what to check
so the more i deal with this motor, the more i find. oil all in the valley pan. (grommet blown?), oil coming from around the oil filter (yes old ring is off), oil pan leaking from all around. that's wha ti can think of off the top of my head. I'm considering buying a new engine, ($700 a good price?). The guy assures me it is a good running engine with no problems. but so did the guy who sold me the truck. anyway, he offered to start it and let me see/hear it run and i could bring a mechanic along with me. aside from obvious leaks, what should i check for?

cavatation if its a 7.3 blow by be sure it is cold when he starts it for you tell him not to run it any before you arrive see how rough it runs when started with cold motor might need injectors if it runs real rough
