Well i have a 2001 f-250 with 73000 miles on it. I just bought it about 2 weeks ago and i ahve put about 800 miles on it. Anyway i have noticed that it started shifting a little harder and it is only 2nd to 3rd shift all the rest of the shifts are good. Anyway i just noticed that it was leaving tranny fluid spots on my driveway. Well today i took it to a friend of mine that rebuild trannies and i got on it pretty good and when i got to his house i noticed tranny fluid allover under the truck. I then got back into the truck and got out of his drive way. I then looked back and saw a trail of fluid where i had turned into his street. The fluid is coming from where the tranny mates with the engine. What could it be and did i mess up my tranny? Please help.

Welcome to FTE!
Sorry to be the bearer of bad new but these are classic symptoms of the dreaded mechanical diode that were in some of the 01 transmissions giving up the ghost. Your looking at a total rebuild.
My trans was leaking fluid out of the same area two days ago, but I was overloaded (30k gross) and the trans was at 245 deg.
Do you have a trans temp gauge? Did you overheat it?
Mine stopped leaking once it cooled down, but if you have noticed a small leak for a while you may just have an input shaft seal leak.
You have to pull the trans (or at least slide it back) to replace it.
If the fluid is full and it still shifts weird, it may be bad news....
I wish you the best, mine blew yesterday, I hope you have a much better outcome.
The experts will be along soon to help you.
sounds like front pump seal blew out. i work for the city of stratford, and one of our trucks did what you described and it was front pump seal. now what we were told was that a valve in the valve body jammed and back pressure blew the seal out. good luck!
Update: Well my buddy called me and gave me some good and bad news. He said my tranny was fine and the leak that i had was motor oil. He says i lost about 2 quarts and there was no way i hurt the motor. Anyway before i got it the previous owner took the truck to a shop and it had a valve cover leak. Anyway they replace the valve gaskets and the valve couvers they also replaced the wiring assembly to the glow plugs. Anyway i have all the paper work and it was a total $915.50. I am starting to think that it is leaking out of the head gaskets.
The bad part is that this shop is 4 hours away and i dont know if they will honor any kind of warrenty since the truck changed hands. All of this work was done on June 18th. What do you guys think that i shouold do?
Call them up and tell them the issue, don't say it changed hands. Just as long as you have the receipt it should be ok. These trucks have a lot of oil in them 2 qts isn't going to kill the motor.
Sounds more like a HPO leak to me. In the time I have been on this forum, no one has reported a leaking valve cover.
Look down in the valley between the heads, I'll bet it's full of oil. Clean it up with Simple Green or some other degreaser and start the engine and look for the leak. Prolly an o-ring on the HPOP or HPO line.
