Changing the transmission fluid

You have two filters, an internal filter that does not need changed on a regular basis (it's basically a screen for major fails) and a external bypass filter in the right front wheel well that needs changed every 20,000 miles or so.
Many people (myself included) feel that, because of the solvent nature of ATF, a transmission that has not been regularly maintained is better served by changed the contents of the pan every 3-5000 miles for 4 rotations to gradually introduce the new fluid and keep from breaking loose large amounts of deposited solids.
If it were my truck, I would change the external filter (22mm socket and a impact to take it off and NOT to put it on) and the pan contents (about 7 1/2 qts) then change the pan contents again in 3000 miles until I'd done that four times and change the filter again.
I like Lucas Oil Multi-Vehicle ATF : Lucas Oil - Lucas Oil Multi-Vehicle ATF and, yes it is approved for LV and SP replacement.
