Cant i just flip my axle to the top of the leaf springs with the existing brackets? I know they sell kits, but i dont understand why you can't just use your existing brackets
Do you mean cut your own brackets off of flip the axle over? If you flip the axle i'm pretty sure you'll go backwards when you put the tranny into a foreward gear. I could be wrong.
You are correct about going backwards by flipping over the axle. A kid in high school did that on his dart. Pretty funny, he put it in drive and nearly ran over us standing behind him. He got a spot in the annual for that one.
what are you working on there buddy??? lets say a jeep rearend yes you can take and cut the old mount off the housing and weld them back on the top this willgive 2-4 of lift but here is the doosy I hav had this done not something a shade tree mechanic need to do with a stick welder you have to get the old mount's off with out hurting them then weld them on top with the correct pionion angel can be done but man your messing with you life on this take it to some one to do it for you (welding shop's)

If you're trying to take the rear end from hangin under the springs and put it on top of the springs then you're trying to lower it. You'll get about 3 to 4 inches this way.
You don't want to reuse the old parts.
1. Why worry about trying to cut the spring perches off the rear end cleanly to reuse them when new ones are about $15.00 for a pair.
2. You'll need a new base plate. This is what the U bolts drop down into. The design is different than that used when the rear end is located under the springs.
3. You'll need new U bolts . In the old position, the U bolts looked like this - I_I turned upside down. The new ones will look like this - U turned uoside down.
Anyway. Forget the $95.00 plus packagin plus shipping that certain Calif. based vintage truck parts suppliers ask for the kit. Go to your local truck/trailer spring shop and get a kit for mounting a trailer rear end. Specify how wide your leafsprings are and for aprox. $30.00 you'll get everthing you need, except a lower shock mount. This you can buy elsewhere (to be welded to the axle housing for about $20.00 or so) or take the new base plates in the kit to a local small machine shop and he can weld on some lower shock mounts for about $25.00
So run around yourself and pay about $50. to $60.00 or buy the packaged kit from "extra surcharges are us" for $95.00 plus about another $40.00 by the time you get it in the mail.
