So I just bought an older 5th wheel, it's not a huge one and I believe its dry weight is a little under 5500 lbs. Normally I would say to buy the best hitch I could afford but paying close to a grand for some of these seems a bit of overkill. My truck has the 5.4 so its not like I'm going to get a bigger 5th, with this truck anyway. My problem is I really don't know anything about the hitches, so what are some of your thoughts? Any brands that are good, or that I should stay away from? Is a sub $500 hitch worth it?
Look at the Curt, pretty inexpensive. I had the cheapest Draw Tite (Reese) 15K hitch, the Trail Boss, for a 98 Tahoe 22' 5th wheel on an F150, worked great. For $250 you can order a Reese No Drill custom bracket kit and install yourself in a couple hours, I just did it, works great. No holes drilled in truck frame, only in bed for rail attachment.
I have a 14 year old Reese 15k non tilting hitch in our F250 with 5.4L to tow our 8500 lb 5th wheel. All 5th wheel hitches that I've seen will work within their ratings. I like the standard Reese, Curt, Drawtite two jaw non tilting hitch. Just my humble opinion...
