4 Injectors bad. Need your help!

Well I have a 2004 6.0 Powerstroke just shy of 140,000 miles. Truck was sputtering so I called my main Ford mechanic told him I had an idea that it was the injectors by the way it was running. Took it to a mechanic that works at Ford been doing it for 30 years, great guy knows what he's doing. Has a shop out of his house so I didn't have to take it to Ford. Hooked it up to the computer and ran it for about 15 minutes and already found out...

Turns out inject 3,5,6,8 are all bad. 3 and 5 are misfiring, 6 and 8 are worse. He said after 15-20 minutes of driving it runs fine. It's generally a cold start when it runs like crap. He told me that the spool valves are sticking. He also said that my FCIM pump is running 100% properly with the correct amount of voltage, etc.

I asked him what the bill was and he knows I'm a college student trying to get by he gives me pretty good prices but he can only go as low as what the parts cost him as well.

Injectors- $286 Each
(He said there was some kind of fluid or connector that I had to buy with the injector as well that was about $85? I have no idea what it was though.)
Labor- $600
Total - $1,228

He told me that if I can find injectors cheaper then go ahead and buy them it wouldn't offend him. I know I've seen Ford Injectors cheaper than $286 each and I was hoping that you guys could help me out on directing me in a better direction.

Also, does $600 sound fair for labor for this type of job?

ALL of your help is greatly appreciated!!

Thank you,
-Jeremy.

You can buy reconditioned injectors for cheaper... Those he is quoting you must be new. I think you can get reconditioned ones for less then $200 but they probably won't last as long as new. If you trust that the guy will do a good job i.e. as if it were his own vehicle then the $600 is probably worth it. I'm sure you would pay far more at the dealer.

Did he check your fuel pressure? if not you need the fuel pressure checked IMO.

the price he is giving you is for ford reman injectors. IMO. the price is very fair on the parts. we retail them for 350/ea.
600 for labor is also a fair to good deal. customer pay time for injectors on each back will be right around 8 hours.

What is involved with the labor? I know that you have to pull the valve covers off, then pop the injectors. Do you just unplug and plug in the new injectors or is there something that you have to replace other than the injectors?

lots of stuff to work around and work with. pulling off valve covers seem simple enugh till you try once. form there you have to remove the oil supply rails, the stand pipes, then the injector hold down.
also keep one thing in mind you are not paying a tech on how long it take that take to do a job. you are paying a flate rate labor time. if it takes 10 hours and not 6 you still pay the 6 you were quoted.
some times we when some times the customer wins.

This is not to mention that those of you with dual alternator equipped trucks can expect to pay a little more in labour if the passenger side valve cover needs to be removed.

In my opinion, $600 in labour is more than fair, if not excellent, due to the fact he has to remove BOTH valve covers and high pressure oil rails to access the four injectors you speak of. If it were only on one bank, he likely would be charging less.
