Found one I like...now what?
I just joined today.
I am sick and tired of fixing my relatively new cars so I am selling them off and I want an old pickup. My favorites are the Slicks and I have found a 66 F100 custom cab that is six ours away from me and I plan to go see it and hopefully buy it if it is as good as it looks. I want to make it my daily driver.
If anyone has any advice on specific things i should look for when I see it in person please fire them at me!

Details:
'66 F100 custom cab
Off frame restoration in '82
-painted cab (inside & out), box, and frame (claims no rust and can't see any in the pics)
-rebuilt the 352 at same time
Converted to a C6 two years ago and added power steering and power brakes at same time.
Looks straight and clean, no ripples, the seams and trim all line up properly.
Engine bay is clean and orderly with no obvious fluid leaks.

Also ask for build pictures. If there are no pics showing those areas I mentioned there is a good chance they were rusty. A lot of nice solid trucks out there instead of buying a fixed rust bucket.
Where is the truck from? Just about guaranteed if its a eastern truck it had/has rust issues.
There is a local truck similar to what you describe but the build quality is so poor. (restored) I would not give 500.00 for entire truck.
Post pics and we can help you better. If you are worried about someone else snagging it you can email me pics and I can help you out. I think the Slick trucks are the best thing going and very reasonable in pricing.
If seller has pictures and or invoices make sure they are included in purchase as it could help if you ever decide to sell

Have you already ascertained that all the cheaper vehicles out there don't meet your needs?

For a first truck its a good idea to buy something nice. Not sure if you can do major work or not yourself but if not it gets very EXPENSIVE for labor costs.
If it was an actual frame of restoration with good photos and done right it still may be worth the asking price if it has not had major deterioration since then.
But, There are some very nice trucks out there for under 10k. A california show winner from west coast nationals they are asking 45k. When my truck is done it will be north of 50k. (not that it will be for sale)
I have seen quite a few vehicles out of TN that are very solid and have seen rust buckets there too. Same as here.
To give you an idea on costs. Say you have a very solid accident and rust free truck that needs a restoration. No labor costs and it will be a minimum of 12k to restore.
Figure 600-1000hrs in labor and it gets expensive in a hurry. A good engine rebuild alone will be in the thousands. Paint and supplies over 2k easy. Easy to spend 10k just on little parts.

To give you an idea
take engine apart and replace gaskets under 200.00 give it a quick coat of paint and call it a rebuild. Cheaper yet and I have seen it. 1/2 can of Krylon and call engine rebuilt. LOL
Rebuild it the correct way and the costs skyrocket.
Its easy to spend 2k on just the basics for a rebuild
good machine work will be 700.00 plus
Its really expensive to restore these days and if you can find a nice one done its much cheaper than doing one yourself.
Finding a solid body is first major step. Once a rust bucket always a rust bucket. A lot of people spend HUGE sums of $ to fix a rusty truck compared if they would have bought a nice one to start with.
Here parts are cheap and every where.
